Hans Deryk is a contract photojournalist with over 25 years of newspaper and wire service experience. He has worked as a staff photographer for The Associated Press and The Canadian Press, as well as with seven major Canadian newspapers including his position as Chief Photographer at The Toronto Star - Canada's Largest Newspaper, after having served as their photo director for two years.
Deryk is a veteran of eight Olympic Games, World Cup soccer, numerous Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups and NBA playoffs. News events covered through the years include The Gulf War, political strife in Panama, Haiti and the Middle East, hurricane coverage in Florida and Nicaragua, royal weddings and the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
He has been awarded an industry-coveted National Newspaper Award for sports photography, a National Magazine Award for Location Photography and The Associated Press Best Sports Feature Photo of the Year Award. He was selected as one of the top 100 photographers in the world for the Day In The Life of Canada book project, as well as being selected to participate in A Day In The Life of The NHL, and Share The Flame: The Official Retrospective of the Olympic Torch Relay.
Deryk returned to the south Florida area in September 2006 where he previously worked for five years as a staff photographer for The Associated Press, covering news, sports and feature assignments based out of Miami. He currently has a freelance career based in the Ft. Lauderdale area, where he is a regular contributor to the Reuters News Pictures Service and The AP.
His images have appeared in magazines such as Esquire, Sports Illustrated, ESPN Sports Magazine and Newsweek. His list of corporate clients have included Nike Canada, The Capital Grille, StirCrazy,The BlueMan Group, WTA, CORE Golf Academy, ING, Action Images, U.S. Diving and Converse.
